Leander adopted its name from Leander “Catfish” Brown, one of the earliest settlers in the area. It is part of Greater Austin. The city of Leander was established in 1882 on land donated by early pioneers Elisha and Sarah Crockett for a railroad depot along the Georgetown-Austin Branch Railroad. A small community grew up around this train stop, known as Leander Station. In 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau designated Leander as one of its fastest-growing cities in America; it ranked 38th in overall growth out of more than 500 cities nationwide.
