Leander adopted its name from Leander “Catfish” Brown, one of the earliest settlers in the area. It is part of Greater Austin. The city of Leander was established in 1882 on land donated by early pioneers Elisha and Sarah Crockett for a railroad depot along the Georgetown-Austin Branch Railroad. A small community grew up around this train stop, known as Leander Station.
